History
- A group of PhD sociology students at the LSE - Natividad Gutierrez, Daniele Conversi, Athena Leoussi, Obi Igwara (in memoriam), Alison Palmer and Laurel Jagroo - conceive of holding a conference on 'Nationalism in a post-Marxist world' in the wake of the dramatic political changes in Eastern Europe.
- Anthony D. Smith, Ernest Gellner, Raymond Pearson, Eric Hobsbawm, John Keane, and Anthony Giddens are the keynote speakers at what becomes the first ASEN conference. 180 attended, including Alain Touraine, Eugene Kamenka, Alice Erh-Soon Tay, and Fred Halliday.
- The Association for the Study of Ethnicity and Nationalism is founded at the LSE. Anthony D. Smith is President, Obi Igwara and Athena Leoussi are Chairs, and the members are Percy Cohen, Daniele Conversi, Natividad Gutierrez, Obi Igwara, Laurel Jagroo, James Mayall, Alison Palmer, and George Schopflin.
- The second ASEN Conference takes place on 'European Community and National Identity'
- 'Race and Nation' is the topic of the third ASEN Conference
- The 4th annual conference is held on 'The Resurgence of Nationalism: Ethnic Conflict and Secession'
- The 5th annual conference is held on 'The Resurgence of Nationalism II: Ethnic Conflict and International Security'
- The first issue of Nations and Nationalism is published. Authors include Anthony D. Smith, Bhikhu Parekh, Michael Hechter, Raymond Pearson, George Schöpflin, Edward Shils, Terry Mulhall, Obi Igwara, and Athena Leoussi.
- The 6th annual conference is held on 'Nationalism and Religion'. Following the passing of Ernest Gellner in 1995, the first Gellner Lecture is held, becoming the conference keynote
- The 7th annual conference is held on 'Nationalism and Democracy'
